BacMan Geothermal Production Field (BGPF)

Location : Covers the boundary of Legaspi City, Sorsogon City, Bacon District of Sorsogon City and the town of Manito Albay in the Bicol Region, South of Luzon.

The Bacon-Manito field at the boundaries of Albay and Sorsogon provinces has perhaps the longest gestation period, having been caught by the national financial crisis in the 1980’s. Time was when only one PNOC rig was in operations in Bacman but finally the field went out stream in 1993-1994 with Palayan Units 1 and 2 of 55 MW each. This station is called Bacman I with combined capacity of 110 MW.

Simultaneously, Bacman II was developed. In 1994, Unit 3 with 20 MW was commissioned at the Cawayan sector. By 1998, two more units are committed for operations, namely Unit 4 at Botong with 20 MW and Unit 5, an Ormat Binary System, with 12 MW. These are PNOC EDC’ initial contributions to Luzon grid.

Mindanao Geothermal Production Field (MGPF)

Location
: Within the borders of Barangay Ilomavis, Kidapawan City in the province of North Cotabato

The fourth field developed by PNOC-EDC is located of the North Cotabato side of Mt. Apo and is simply called Mindanao I. It has the smallest geothermal reservation, 710 hectares of kaingin and primary forest, set aside by the Presidential Proclamation after intense public debates resulting in the delayed issuance of an ECC on 1992.

Because of stringer ECC requirements such as the zero waste disposal system, it took PNOC EDC four years to commission Unit 1 with 52 MW in December 1996.

The power plant was constructed and is being operated under the BOT system by the Oxbow-Marubeni consortium. At present, power services goes to the capital town of Kidapawan through a special transmission line constructed for that purpose. Later, another line will connect Mindanao I to the power grid.

A second unit of 48 MW has been awarded, again to an Oxbow-Marubeni consortium, still under BOT scheme. Phase 2 is expected to be operational by May 1999. The operation of this unit will raise Philippine geothermal capacity to a new high of 1,900 MW by 1998.

Southern Negros Geothermal Production Field (SNGPF)

Location : 21 kilometers northeast of Dumagete City in the municipality of Valencia, Negros Oriental

Simultaneous with developments in Leyte, the Palinpinon field in Southern Negros was also drilled and developed starting 1978, resulting in the commissioning of 112.5 MW of generating capacity in mid 1983, serving initially the power requirements of Negros Oriental.

This field is a prime example of compact development where virtually everything is located within a 60 hectare area. Productions well are a few meters apart from one another at the surface but each one is directional, directed at different targets underground. The production pipelines are similarly laid out together toward the separator stations and later down to Units 1 to 3 of the Palinpinon-I power plant.

With a new and more reliable transmission line, Palinpinon power was extended to Negros Occidental several years later.
A submarine cable was laid out toward Panay Island via Guimaras to bring more reliable geothermal power to additional four provinces of Western Visayas. The increase in power demand was met with the commissioning of 40 MW from Units 4 and 5 (Palinpinon II) in 1994.

Subsequently, another submarine cable was laid out by NPC to connect Negros Island with Cebu Island. The additional power demand was similarly serve by Units 6 and 7 (Palinpinon II) with another 40 MW starting 1995.
